PUNKS NOT DEAD
Australia now has an independent punk music magazine that aims to help a scene that is considered ‘dead’ by many individuals. Three punk music lovers made the decision in August 2009 to start a punk music fanzine to simply discuss their favourite bands with other music lovers but over the last five months the magazine has taken them to places they never thought possible. Renegades Empire magazine is now stocked in selected newsagencies Australia wide thanks to their distribution deal with News Direct NND Distribution.
The idea came about after spending three years going to gigs in Sydney and seeing the need for punk gigs to be promoted better both in metro and rural areas. Renegades Empire Magazine gives punk bands from several sub genres including; punk, ska, hardcore, rockabilly and folk, the opportunity to promote their shows, merchandise and new albums/EP’s in a purely punk focused magazine whilst also giving their fans a direct connection to their favourite bands both internationally and home-grown.
“We aim to build up the punk music scene in Australia, most people say the punk scene is dying so we aim to change their attitudes by showing them what they are missing out on and get people appreciating music and attending gigs. Really we are just doing what we love every weekend and hoping that everyone else follows suit.”
With plans to bring out the magazine bi-monthly, the very first issue of Renegades Empire Magazine released early January features Sydney based folk punk band The Rumjacks on the cover as well as articles on; Chris Duke and The Royals (SYD), Charlie Greaser (ACT), Craterface (ADL), Sin City (MELB) and The Snowdroppers (SYD) just to name a few. Looking to grow the magazine, in particularly the gig guide, they urge people to buy a copy for only $10 and support the punk music scene by going to gigs.
